Sarah Harding admits she was ‘such a mess’ before rehab
Sarah Harding has spoken about her decision to go to rehab for the first time, revealing that it was her Girls Aloud bandmates who helped her realise she needed help to sort out her heavy drinking.
The blonde singer – known for her partying ways – said she cried “hysterically” as she headed to a clinic in the US.
Harding said her drinking went out of control as her relationship with ex-fiance Tom Crane disintegrated and she tried to “numb” the pain.
She told Hello! magazine: “The day I left for rehab, I was in such a mess. I’ve been told by those close to me that was when I hit my worst.
“I was crying hysterically. I felt ashamed, embarrassed, terrified – my emotions were all over the place.”
Harding said she was ricocheting between emotional extremes as her wild living spiralled as a way to cope with being down.
The chart star – who scored hits such as Love Machine and Biology – with the girl group sought help for depression and alcohol abuse in October when her relationship with DJ Crane fell apart.
She said: “Our lives had started to go in different directions without us even realising and we’d become like passing ships.
“He had his career, I had mine, and somehow they didn’t seem to marry up. As far as our future plans were concerned, I didn’t see how it would work.
“I was so down but I just tried to keep busy and, to numb myself, I was drinking more. It was my way of escaping.”
And, she admits, the situation soon spiralled.
Harding said her “emotions were all over the place” adding: “One minute I was deliriously happy, to the point of hysteria, and totally in denial about my problems saying, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine.’ The next it hit me and when it did, it hit me hard. It’s all about acceptance.”
It was a dinner with bandmates Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts which made her realise she had a problem. A night earlier she had appeared on the catwalk at a fashion show, then went out to celebrate.
“I went too far, drank way too much,” she told Hello!.
But rather than toning it down the next day, her friends were shocked to see she merely picked up and carried on.
Harding said: “The following night, I saw Nicola and Kimberley for dinner. I wasn’t in a good state at all – I was very hungover. But the first thing I wanted to do was open a bottle of wine. I know they were really worried about me.”
The singer – who checked out of the clinic last month – feels she has now turned it around.
“I’ve turned 30 now and, although there will always be a bit of the rock chick in me, I’m trying to embrace my softer and more feminine side.
“And I am trying really hard to be healthy. I have met up with friends in London since I got back and I’ve realised I can socialise without booze,” added Harding.

New Nadine interview and photoshoot in this week’s OK! Magazine
AFTER splitting from her fiance Jason Bell, Nadine Coyle proves that she is still as strong as ever.
Speaking exclusively to OK! Nadine talks about her broken engagement, moving to New York and reuniting with Girls Aloud.
When talking about her move across the pond, the star says it’s “just for a change. I usually come two or three times a year, but this time it sucked me in right away!
“I first starting coming here when I was 19 and I was still in the band. I thought this place is amazing, so different and it has a lot of things I like.”
Despite her recent break-up with fiance and American Football player Jason Bell, the star says they are still close and explains to us why it ended.
Nadine says: “I’m not in a place right now where i feel like I can walk down the aisle. I still feel I want a bit more me-time before i can fully commit to getting married. I’m not a million years from it, but just not this year.”
The star also opens up about reuniting with Girls Aloud, explaining: “No set details, but it’s been almost ten years for Girls Aloud and our fans have been so supportive and wonderful.
“We will definitely be doing something for them.”

I’VE been really busy promoting the Horrid Henry movie in which I play Prissy Polly.
It was the first time I’d seen the film when I went to the premiere and it was strange watching myself on the big screen but I loved it! Nicola and Sarah came along – it was lovely to have the support there. I really enjoyed making it and the children made the experience.
The younger ones were always asking me for cuddles during filming and I’d happily oblige!
This is my final column for OK!. I’ve had a great time sharing my experiences with everyone and you’ll no doubt see me in the magazine at some point soon!
Amy Winehouse – a tragic loss
I WAS shocked by Amy Winehouse’s death.
I met her a year ago at a party for the head of Universal and she was sober, drug-free and really seemed like she’d turned her life around and was in a good place. She was so lovely and friendly. I feel very sorry for her family – she was so young, talented and loving. Her dad Mitch is said to believe that Amy’s cold turkey approach to quitting the booze may have given her body a shock it couldn’t handle. Whatever happened in the final hours, we’ll probably find that it’s drugs or drink-related, whether that be from taking too many or withdrawing from them too quickly – either way it’s such a tragic loss.
Bad idea, Aisleyne
THERE’S been a backlash about Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace going on This Morning and talking about Amy Winehouse so soon after she died.
I watched her on the show and it seemed like she was more interested in clearing her name following reports that neighbours had seen the singer fall out of a taxi after a night out with Aisleyne a few days earlier, than being a friend and talking about Amy’s life, which was definitely in bad taste.
Cheryl and I went out incognito!
I’VE just had five fab days of sunbathing in LA – it was wonderful to go and chill out completely and Cheryl and I spoilt ourselves with massages and cocktails and nice meals out. We met up with Derek Hough for a catch-up over dinner and we even managed a night of clubbing, incognito. We had a bit of a dance and discovered coffee-flavoured Patrón Tequila – it makes you a nice happy drunk, so it was our girls’ holiday drink of choice!
The only thing missing was a bit of shopping, but it was too hard to organise as Cheryl Cole gets hounded out there by the paparazzi – it was terrifying. We braved them a few times but they were insanely psycho – climbing over people’s property and people had to call the police to get rid of them. It made me realise what it is like for her, I get scared for her in the madness.
It was tough to come back. LA is a such a mad world, it’s nice to dip in and out of, but I wouldn’t live there. I missed my boyfriend – and I kept getting texts with pics of my baby nephew, saying: ‘Come home Auntie Kim!’
Harper Seven’s here!
CHERYL and I were in LA when baby Beckham was born, but no, I didn’t go and visit!
The name Harper Seven is controversial but we knew they’d choose something unusual. Harper is good, but the Seven part? Kids at school might nickname her ‘Half past seven’. I’m glad Victoria got the little girl she wanted – I know she wouldn’t change her boys but a mum can share different things with a little girl. Harper will be well protected by her three older brothers – well, until she becomes a teenager and she starts to get interested in boys!
Danielle Lloyd’s baby drama
THE model Danielle Lloyd has had a tough week after she gave to her little boy ten weeks before his due date.
Her baby weighed just 4lbs 4oz at birth, he is so tiny! I am thinking of them, and of course I hope that he will go on to do well. My nephew was 6lbs at birth and like a little doll. If Danielle’s baby stays in hospital for a little while it will be hard, but she will be glad he is getting the best care. It’s difficult when they are in an incubator but think of all the cuddles to come.
Take That are getting on a bit!
SARAH Harding has taken herself off to Ibiza.
I loved those pictures of her and her mates on a yacht and I’m loving that she’s got a bit of blonde back in her hair, she’ll always be a blonde to me! I think it’s sweet that she’s taken a month off to be with Tommy while he DJs as she doesn’t want to be apart from him. Although I think it helps that his work involves partying – Sarah loves it! I’m like an old woman compared to her!
Nicola and I went to see Take That and we were in the royal box! It was amazing. I popped into Gary Barlow’s dressing room to say hi but there were no after-parties as everyone’s getting on a bit and had to leave quickly to get home to their families!
Natalie Cassidy’s heartache
MY heart goes out to Natalie Cassidy.
It sounds like she had a horrific relationship with her ex, Adam. I was disturbed to read that he used to drive the car really fast to torment her while their baby was in the back – that’s shocking and she’s better off without him. It just shows, you don’t always know what goes on behind closed doors as they seemed happy. You rarely know the truth when it comes to celebrities’ relationships.
Single George Clooney
GEORGE Clooney’s best friend has gone on record saying that he wasn’t surprised George is single again as he’s anti-marriage and never wants kids and has also denied George is gay.
I never thought he was gay anyway – he’s had a string of ladies! I do think it’s a shame for women everywhere that he doesn’t want to procreate – there definitely should be gorgeous George’s offspring in the world as he’s so hot. It’s such a terrible waste!
Cheryl Cole’s birthday bash and preparing for another wedding
I’VE had a lovely week filled with sunshine and barbecues! I had one at mine on Saturday, the first since I moved into my new house. I love ’em, but why is it the man who always does the cooking? I’m not complaining though – they should do it more!
It was Cheryl Cole’s birthday last week – we don’t always get to see each other on our birthdays because of work so it was really nice to all get together and celebrate this year! As always she looked amazing and I love the new hair, but she’d look great with green hair, any hair!
I’m off to prepare for another wedding – this time it’s one of Justin’s oldest friends getting married. Justin is best man so I think he is more nervous than the groom because of the speech, and I’m trying to choose my fourth wedding outfit of the year – I’m churning them out! You come to a certain age and everyone is getting married or moving home or having babies. Everyone loves a wedding, though!
Crazy In Love with Beyonce at Glastonbury
I THOUGHT Beyoncé’s Glastonbury appearance was amazing.
I am absolutely her biggest fan! She’s been asked about having children recently and as we are almost exactly the same age, I can relate to her. Like Beyoncé, when I was younger I thought I’d have a child by 30 – suddenly 35 seems like a good age! I think because of her career, and especially the touring, she might want to put it off. But I am so excited for when she does have children. Just imagine the rhythm that Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s baby is going to have!
Prince Harry’s girl
I LOVE that while William has gone for a straight-laced woman in Kate, cheeky Harry’s gone: ‘Nah – I’m going to go for an underwear model!’
He always likes to push the boundaries, it makes me laugh. His new girl, Florence Brundenell-Bruce, is very attractive, and her ex Jenson Button seems nice so I’m sure she’s a lovely girl. She needs to take a big old deep breath, though, if they are going into a relationship. Now William is married there will be even more interest in him and what he’s doing. It could be quite intense.
RYAN Giggs’ name is out and what a badly kept secret that was! I think if he’d come clean at the start we’d have moved on to the next thing by now.
Personally I don’t think the public should necessarily have to be informed of everything that’s going on in people’s personal lives just because they’re public figures, but I do think that nobody, however rich or famous, should be able to buy silence, it’s money over morals! Money shouldn’t get you what you want, that’s not a good message to be putting out there, so from that respect I’m glad it’s out in the open. It was game over for Giggsy when he tried suing Twitter – that was silly, what about freedom of speech? It’s his wife Stacey I feel sorry for. She’s in an impossible situation at the moment and I understand why she’s putting on a brave face in public while she works out in private how she wants the relationship to move forward, if at all…
Jed-cases!
WHEN I saw those pictures of Jedward meeting Barack Obama, I cracked up.
It’s slightly concerning that they were able to meet the US president, though, and I can’t believe they performed their Eurovision song for him! Jedward fascinate me – they’re lovely but they’re the most bizarre people. I met them on This Morning a while ago and as they passed me in the corridor they stopped me and launched into their full dance routine, microphones and all!
Cheers, Adele!
ADELE has turned down performing at all the big festivals this year as she says she just wants to go to a park and drink cider with her mates!
She’s so successful at the moment that money and fame aren’t an issue for her so she’s earned the right to step back and relax. Don’t get me wrong, the buzz you get from playing is amazing but if she’s missing hanging out with her friends, then why not? She’s keeping it real. She also said that she doesn’t want to endorse any products, but, you never know, something might come along that she really wants to be involved in.
Cheryl speaks to OK! about her secrets to wowing on the red carpet
CHERYL Cole and newly appointed US X Factor judge reveals her golden secrets to impressing on the red carpet.
Stunning star Cheryl Cole has done her fair share of wowing at Cannes Film Festival over the past week, we catch up with the songstress and find out her red carpet secrets.
When chatting about walking the red carpet, the X Factor judge says: “Well, the most important thing is to make sure you’re covered from all angles. You must remember on the red carpet it’s 360-degree angles those photographers get.
“Whether it’s putting a bit of sticky tape somewhere so you don’t show anything you don’t want to, you need to make those checks.”
The Geordie beauty also reveals that her main starting point is “a gorgeous dress!”, she says: “It’s amazing to do the girlie thing and to have your hair and make-up done – but it’s also really stressful sometimes too.
“I always get nervous before walking red carpets.”
You can see full interview including more of Cheryl’s red carpet secrets in this week’s OK! Magazine, out now!
