Sick Cheryl Tweedy is insisting her Girls Aloud bandmate Kimberley Walsh takes her place on X Factor if she is too ill to make the show.

Cheryl, 27, who has been told by doctors she may need six months off work as she battles malaria, says she could think of no one more suitable to fill her role as a judge on the new series, which goes live this autumn.

A close friend of the singer said she is “tearful and depressed” about her illness, which she caught from a mosquito bite while holidaying with dancer friend Derek Hough in Africa.

And her mother Joan Callaghan is said to be furious with X Factor bosses who believed she was hung-over when she turned up for work at the Cardiff auditions last week…when in fact she was showing early signs of the illness. X Factor supremo Simon Cowell, even joked that Cheryl had a hangover. But the following day she collapsed and has been in hospital since last Sunday.

The friend said: “Joan thinks the X Factor should have stepped in sooner and allowed Cheryl some time off.

“Now there is no way she will let Cheryl get back to work until she is 100 per cent well.”

Both Cheryl and her manager Hilary Shaw have been pushing Cowell to bring in Kimberley to take over – although Cowell is keen on former Pop Idol star Myleene Klass. Cheryl’s illness has already forced her to pull out of this weekend’s X Factor auditions in Manchester where Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger appeared as a guest judge. The friend told the Sunday Mirror: “Doctors have told Cheryl that in the worst case she might need to take six months off.

“So she’s already making plans for what to do if she can’t return for the new series.”

Kimberley Walsh has signed up to host new celebrity and music show Suck My Pop.

The programme, which will air on Viva, is said to include showbiz news, interviews and performances.

The Friday evening series will also broadcast the Official Chart Update, a ‘Top Five’ feature and a segment on what celebrities have been saying online.

Walsh, who will host the show alongside Will Best, said: “I’m so excited to be hosting Suck My Pop on Viva! It’s going to be such a fun show, jam-packed with all the latest music and entertainment news. If I wasn’t presenting the show, I’d definitely be watching it!”

The Girls Aloud star has previously hosted a documentary about jeans and presented live from the red carpet at the BAFTAs.

Suck My Pop begins on July 23 at 7pm on Viva

For a band who live in London and have played there on many occasions, you’d have thought that Girls Aloud would know the city like the back of their hands.

But in a big town it’s easy to lose your sense of direction, as Kimberley Walsh discovered this weekend.

The girl band member looked around her in bewilderment as she left her hotel in central London this weekend.

Walsh, 29, and her assistant spent a few minutes standing around aimlessly, looking in both directions as they left the Sanderson Hotel.

Having concluded that they had no idea where they were going, it was down to a helpful local to show them the way.

Kimberley was snapped stopping to ask a restaurant owner directions, who gladly obliged.

She then laughed as she realised where she was going as she and her assistant headed off in the right direction.

Kimberley is still enjoying Girls Aloud’s current hiatus and has been trying to get into TV presenting while the other four also pursue solo projects

Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh is well known for her voluptuous shape. But despite having long accepted her curvaceous figure, she still has some testing times when it comes to shopping for clothes.

The Girls Aloud star revealed shopping for jeans – for most women a wardrobe must-have – often reduces her to tears.

Kimberley said: ‘I’ve been known to shed a few tears at times [when buying jeans] it’s quite distressing!’

And she had some support from fellow curvy girl on show This Morning, Holly Willoughby who agreed saying: ‘I love shopping, I’m a woman and it’s my right to shop, but my least favourite shopping of all is for jeans…’

Kimberley spoke of her distress at not knowing what size will fit, and the tears come when the usual size just won’t do up.

She told Holly: ‘You think if your usual don’t fit you then you think ‘that’s no good – I’ve obviously put on weight’ but it’s not necessarily, it might just be the wrong cut. ‘I just end up in the changing rooms with twenty pairs of jeans on the floor feeling thoroughly depressed.’

Kimberley spoke to Holly and Phillip Schofield on show This Morning, as she promoted her new documentary for Sky 1 HD – Kimberley Walsh: Blue Jean Girl.

The singer’s programme is a look into the world of denim. She came up with the idea after struggling to find the perfect pair of jeans for myself and then it evolved into looking at the history of and all things related to denim.
