Wearing the obligatory oversized shades, Nicola Roberts breezes into our shoot a super-starry hour and a half late.Muttering something about a delayed doctor’s appointment, she air-kisses her way round the Hollywood-esque entourage who have been waiting patiently for her arrival.

In the past, she was always very much the fifth member of Girls Aloud – the baby of the group, the reluctant star, often painted as the shy, slightly sulky redhead. But today Nicola is a confident, tough-talking sex kitten and fast becoming a style icon.

The low self-esteem that once tormented her has been banished and a gutsy young woman is starting to emerge.

“I was so insecure, but you’ve got to accept who you are,” she says.

And it’s clear she has. Gone is the fake tan Nicola once slathered herself in to compete with her bandmates. Gone too are the golden highlights she used to disguise the red hair that made her the butt of so many cruel taunts.

It’s taken time, but she has finally embraced her looks. And so have others.

Now, Nicola, 24, is regularly spotted in prime position on the coveted front row at top fashion shows, has designers queuing up to dress her and, after 18 months of hard work, has just fully launched her own brand of make-up – Dainty Doll – designed especially for girls with pale skin.

What do you look for in the contestants?

The best people that walk on stage are always the people that know what they want to be and already know what style of music they want, and have an image. That’s always when I know I’ve got something good to work with. All I’m looking for is somebody that is new, that is unique, that you look at and think, ‘you have got it, you’ve got the X Factor’.

Does it get any easier saying ‘No’ to auditionees?

No, it doesn’t get easier. These kids have been preparing and rehearsing at home, and this day is like the biggest day of their lives. It’s horrible. You can see their faces and they’re saying ‘Please’ to you sometimes. I just have to keep telling myself it’s not fair to patronise them, to keep something alive that’s not working. That’s one of the hardest parts actually, because there is always someone there that reminds you that this is their dream and it’s a big deal for them. Those few minutes are massive, and telling them ‘No’ is tough.

Every time you start a new audition, do you always think this could be the place where you might find the winner?

You never know where you’re going to find just that one person who could be the potential winner, so it’s always exciting when you start at a new place. Even though sometimes the days are really long and you think there’s just nobody, there’s always that one person who pops out and you think, ‘I’ve found a star today’. And it’s exciting when you start a new day, because you just hope this is the day you find that one person you need.

The Girls Aloud star talks to Cosmo about her must-have beauty products, her big hair and her new makeup collection, Dainty Doll, launching in Harrods where Nicola will appearing on August 24th.

Cheryl’s X Factor protégé Joe McElderry says that her new man Derek Hough, who she’s been reportedly dating for the past four months, will help her recover from her divorce from love-rat Ashley Cole.

He told Closer magazine: “I went to see Cheryl perform in London and she was dancing with Derek. Afterwards backstage, he was so sweet and caring around her. He’s obviously her rock. They’ve become really close – he’s perfect for her.”
