Cheryl Cole is being lined up for a sizzling new double act with dancer pal Derek Hough on US TV’s Dancing with the Stars.

The singer’s team has been informally approached by ABC network bosses who believe Cheryl and Derek would make an explosive duo.

They were keen to sign her up for the autumn series of the show but such a commitment would clash with her work on X Factor.

So instead they’ve sounded out her representatives about starring as one of the celebrity dancers in the series starting in March 2011 with the final in May.

A source said: “Her US team think it will be a great move for her and increase her profile stateside. Partnering her with Derek too would be a masterstroke and they want her to give it serious thought.

“Derek danced with Cheryl on her recent tour and enjoyed a sultry ballroom dance in her Parachute video so the chemistry is certainly right.”

Cheryl recently returned from a romantic holiday in Tanzania with Derek, 25, and is now taking part in X Factor auditions.

The source added: “This is just the sort of vehicle to propel Cheryl into the bigtime Stateside. Derek thinks she’ll be great.”

Meanwhile, she is celebrating her 27th birthday today in style with a party thrown by her mother Joan and Girls Aloud at one of their houses. Manicurists and masseurs will be on hand.

It’s a far cry from last year’s star-studded celebration where her ex Ashley treated her to a wild night on the town with Simon Cowell and Alexandra Burke.

A source said: “Cheryl is so excited to have the people the most important around her. It will be a private bash, and girls only.

“Nadine won’t be there which will only lead to speculation there’s a division in the band and it’s fair to say Cheryl’s not as close to her as the others.”

“This birthday in particular is such a milestone. She’s been through so much with Ashley and has come out smiling and stronger than ever. Her solo career has gone through the roof.”

Cheryl got an early birthday treat yesterday when a lifeguard serenaded her and Katy Perry, stripping off his shirt during an X Factor audition in Dublin.

Cheryl and Will worked together on her debut album, 3 Words and have made no secret of the fact they’d like to continue working with one another.

Will told the Big Issue: “[Cheryl's] dope, I like collaborating with her. We’ve talked about working on her next album, plus we signed her to the label in America.

“We’re figuring out how we go about it in the States. It has to be something really incredible done in a different way.”

But if you’re hoping there is something more than friendship between the pair you’re going to be disappointed as Will addressed the rumours that he wants to sleep with the singer…

“I heard that, it’s so not true. Cheryl is a lovely girl. We’ve had the best time on tour, hanging out after the show and partying.”

“Cheryl has people looking at houses. She goes into X Factor when she finished the current tour. That takes her up to Christmas. But she is keen to close a chapter and start a new life in America.”

And another insider spoke to the Evening Standard about Simon’s plans for Cheryl…

“She is very close to signing a deal worth millions with Simon. She will be free to pursue her career in America, where Simon is convinced she could be a huge star.”

Simon Cowell is renowned for turning British acts into stars in the States, with Leona Lewis a prime example, so we already have high expectations for Cheryl. The only thing we want know is… what does this mean for Girls Aloud?
