Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts has said she struggled to cope with the band’s decision to go on hiatus.

The five-piece, who also feature Nadine Coyle, Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding and Kimberley Walsh, announced a temporary separation in 2009 and are thought to be reuniting this year to mark their tenth anniversary.

Roberts has told Contact Music that making a solo album helped her get back to music.

She said: “Before I started making the album, I felt so frustrated that I wasn’t making music and I felt like I couldn’t see music in my life for a long time. I didn’t know how I was going to have music in my life until the band had another record.

“It really made me sad. I felt like I wanted to be a singer and I used to write little and then all of a sudden the band went on a break and management were trying to find different things for me to do, this TV work, that TV work, and it was just like, ‘This is really sad, actually.’ Really not sitting well with me at all.”

She continued: “I was frustrated and angry inside every day. That’s what the song ‘Fish Out of Water’ [from album Cinderella's Eyes] was about, what, am I supposed to just find another career because the band is on a break? That’s how I felt.”

Coyle has moved to the USA since the girls put the band on hold, whilst Harding has had low-key acting and presenting success, Walsh has joined the West End production of ‘Shrek: The Musical’ and Cole has achieved a significantly boosted profile through a judging gig on The X Factor and a successful solo career.

Kimberley Walsh reckons a musical featuring Girls Aloud’s songs would be an “amazing” idea.

With a Spice Girls musical already in the pipeline, the 29-year-old thinks her own band could follow suit.

Kimberley, currently starring as Princess Fiona in Shrek the Musical, said: “I do think Girls Aloud the musical would be pretty amazing because the songs really lend themselves to a big extravaganza.”

The singer joined Shrek at Theatre Royal Drury Lane earlier this month after taking over from Amanda Holden.

Kimberley said: “Amanda sent me a gorgeous bunch of flowers and champagne for the first night, which was really nice of her.

“And she decorated the dressing room all lilac and pink like a princess tower. She just enjoyed it so much and just told me to have an amazing time.”

The show sees Kimberley don a fat suit and green ogre make-up, as well entertain the audience with a series of burps and farts.

“Whatever audience you’ve got farting will always work – especially mine. I get wolf whistles sometimes for a fart.” she said.

She also has to speak in an American accent, which impressed Canadian singer Michel Buble on his visit to the show.

“Michael Buble thought it was good. He said ‘I can’t believe you’re not American’,” she revealed.

Talk of Girls Aloud attending Pride of Britain Awards came today’s hot Twitter topic after @PrideOfBritain Twitter tweeted this:

Girls Aloud and JLS to be at #PrideofBritain Awards to be shown on ITV1 on October 5th.

Fans have replied asking if its all 5 Girls attending but there has been no reply. With recent talks of Nadine being in the UK soon, it could be possible for all girls to attend.

What we do know 100%, is that Cheryl Cole will definitely be in attendance honouring Britain’s bravest, after she went to Afghanistan to support the troops.

GIRLS Aloud are planning a spectacular gig at Wembley Stadium to round off a decade in the music biz next year.

I’m told all five Love Machines are committed to a farewell concert in front of a massive 80,000 fans – if they can sell enough tickets.

Although their plans are in the early stages of negotiations, I can reveal Cheryl, Nicola, Sarah, Kimberley and Nadine (surprisingly) will get back on stage for some gigs.

Other possibilities include an ITV2 behind-the-scenes documentary, an ITV1 “Audience With” show and a repackaged greatest hits album with some new tracks.

I caught up with Nicola this week and she told me: “We will all definitely be coming together to do something for our tenth anniversary.

“Personally, I would love to do the whole lot – a new album, tour, the full shebang.

“But it depends what everyone else wants to do. I’m really, really excited about it.”

After a bit more digging my own GA source let slip: “The early talk is a short three-week tour towards the end of the year, finishing at Wembley.

“The Wembley Stadium idea is to get a few of the hottest girlbands and female performers like Leona Lewis, The Saturdays and Alexandra Burke on board and bill it as Ladies Night, with them headlining.

“It would be a good way for the band to pretty much say goodbye – maybe forever.

“If it doesn’t come off fans will definitely get the chance to see all five singing together again.”

With Sugababes clinging on and The Saturdays failing to step-up to the mark, I’d love to see Girls Aloud come
back to Call The Shots again!

Fans who spoke to Nicola at her album launch the next day, were told the 4 girls were at Kimberley’s house catching up. Nicola wanted to tweet a picture of them all but as most were makeup-less and in trackies, they posed in the mirror hiding behind their phones! According to Nicola, Sarah didnt want to hide her face, which is why you can see her peeking!

The picture on twitpic.com currently has over 117,000 views!

One of the big stories last week was that Cheryl flew to Afghanistan to visit the troops. The visit was part of Pride of Britain Awards and footage of her being there will be aired next month.

Sarah has been quiet lately after finishing the filming for Run for your Wife and taking a break from her fiance Tom Crane. She did however, find time to hit the catwalk as part of London Fashion Week for LOOK.
